# Limit ask

> Put in the principal side at your rate. A Leverage trader fills it once.

A limit ask is **Fixed at your own rate**: one order at a rate you choose. You give up your balance in the period **before** a date (the maturity). When a Leverage trader takes your order, you get more balance **from** that date on: your yield, fixed at your rate.

> [!NOTE]
>
> An ask is the same as a Fixed trade at your own rate. On the Fixed tab, a limit rate above the market becomes an ask. See [Limit bid](https://docs.momentrates.xyz/use-the-app/limit-bid.md) for the two sides of a maturity.

## Add an ask

![Limit ask add: 4 leaves the TimeBalance over Oct 2 to Oct 17, the same 4 appears in the order lane, and LP tokens appear](https://mintcdn.com/moment-0fa29e7e/5c4BULtyWxFid-gy/images/limit-ask-add.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=5c4BULtyWxFid-gy\&q=85\&s=8d2b4f8d933c7456da6e7e62cb38cc4d)

The period before the maturity moves from your TimeBalance (red) into the order (green).

1. Open **Limit** in the top bar and pick a market.
2. Pick **Add**, then **TimeBalance** (Moment TBT) or **sUSDS** (shares).
3. Pick **Ask** and a **Maturity**, for example **Oct 17 · 19 days**.
4. Set your rate under **Your rates**. An ask can't be at or below the best bid.
5. The **Cohort** chip shows where you join.
6. Type what you add, for example **4** over **Oct 2 → Oct 17**. **You receive** shows your LP tokens.
7. **Review → Confirm**, then sign.

## While it waits

Before the period starts (Oct 2 here), your order earns no yield, just as that slice wouldn't in your TimeBalance; its value still rises a little as the start gets closer. From the start, it earns the vault's yield on the full amount while it waits, so resting costs you nothing. If nobody takes it by the maturity, the period has run its course: you keep the yield it earned. When a Leverage trader takes it, it fills once. Your fixed amount lands in your TimeBalance at the next sync.

![A limit ask from start to finish: placed, waiting while the market moves, filled by a Leverage trader, then settled at sync](https://mintcdn.com/moment-0fa29e7e/5c4BULtyWxFid-gy/images/limit-lifecycle.gif?s=b5285bb2c97b8d82a0aac0145bc49a08)

Place, wait, fill, then it lands at your next sync.

## Remove an ask

![Limit ask remove: LP tokens go down, the order lane shrinks, and the amount returns to the TimeBalance over Oct 2 to Oct 17](https://mintcdn.com/moment-0fa29e7e/5c4BULtyWxFid-gy/images/limit-ask-remove.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=5c4BULtyWxFid-gy\&q=85\&s=38d4f57d6fb26fd2eb017e501da0ba1a)

LP tokens and the order shrink (red). The period comes back to your TimeBalance (green).

1. Pick **Remove** and choose a cohort in **Your orders**.
2. Choose how much: 25% / 50% / 75% / Max.
3. **You receive · into your TimeBalance** shows what comes back.
4. **Review → Confirm**, then sign.

Open cohorts give your side back. Part-filled cohorts give back the unfilled part now and the filled part at the next sync. See [Limit bid](https://docs.momentrates.xyz/use-the-app/limit-bid.md#remove-a-bid) for the table.

## Cohorts: who gets filled first

Many people can place an order at the same maturity and the same rate. Moment groups those orders into numbered **cohorts**: #1, #2, #3 and so on.

![Three cohorts at one maturity and rate: #1 sealed and filled, #2 sealed and 60% filled with every order 60% filled, #3 open for new orders](https://mintcdn.com/moment-0fa29e7e/5c4BULtyWxFid-gy/images/cohorts.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=5c4BULtyWxFid-gy\&q=85\&s=bf4da6c5809ab8ca68e610aba3b37cbb)

\#1 is filled, #2 is filling, #3 is open. Fills go oldest first.

The rules (a **Leverage** trader fills an ask):

1. **One cohort is open.** A new order joins the open cohort, together with everyone else adding at that maturity and rate.
2. **It seals at its first fill.** As soon as a trader takes any part of it, nobody else can join. The next number opens for new orders.
3. **Oldest first.** Fills go to the oldest cohort that still has room. A newer cohort only fills after every older one is full.
4. **Shared equally inside.** Everyone in a cohort is filled by the same share. If #2 is 60% filled, every order in #2 is 60% filled, big or small.
5. **Paid at sync.** What fills lands in your TimeBalance at your next sync. There is nothing to claim.

So orders that waited longer go first, and nobody can jump ahead by joining a cohort that is already being filled.

One more rule: at the same rate, **Recursive liquidity fills before limit orders**.

**Example**

| Cohort | State | Next fill |
| - | - | - |
| #1 | Sealed · 100% filled | Nothing left to fill |
| #2 | Sealed · 60% filled | Fills first, until it is full |
| #3 | Open · 0% filled | Fills only after #2 is full. New orders join here. |

**In the app**

* **Add** shows the cohort you join, like "Cohort #7 open · you join".
* **Remove** lists **Your orders · By cohort**, so you can take out of each cohort on its own.
* You can be in several cohorts at once, for example if you add on two different days.

## Fees

Makers pay nothing. You keep your full rate.
